"The Last Gig" (Aired December 14, 1996, NBC) Int. Sharkey's. (Tiff, Sam, Lorena, Mark and Sly at table.) Tiffani: Wow, this could be the last Sharkey burger I'll ever eat. On Monday, we'll all be in college and I'll be at the University of Hawaii. Like this burger symbolizes all the laughter and the tears and the love we shared at Sharkeys. Oh, I can't eat it. Lorena: Too sad, huh? Tiffani: No, it got cold. Tony: (crying) Oh, I'm gonna miss this place. Oh, I gotta keep my shirt and my order pad. And this - this - chair stood thingy. Sam: Oh honey, its okay. Moving to England to study Physics at Oxford makes me sad too...and scared. But we're following our dreams, its exciting! Gang: Yeah! (Jake enters.) Jake: Hey, what are you guys doing? We have a gig to practice for. Sam:(starts to cry) Our...last....gig.... Jake: Stop it. Look, I'm telling you nothing really has to change. So you're leaving, I'm sticking around. I'll write some new tunes and well get some more gigs when you come back for Thanksgiving, alright? Mark: Jake, I'm going to Juliard in New York. I'm not coming back for Thanksgiving. Jake: Oh, when you come back for Christmas. Its only a matter of time before we get out big break. Sam: Um, Jake I'm moving to England I wont be back for Christmas. Jake: Fine, spring break. Tony: Well, actually I was.... Jake: Look, fine. It can happen tonight. Sly, Lorena, how many producers did you invite to the gig? Sly: Uh, how many record producers or concert promoters? Jake: Either. Sly: Uh, none. Jake: Come on guys, you're our managers. Lorena: We didn't have time, Jake we've been packing for Pacific University. Sly: Or as I liked to call it "PU". Jake: Hey, where are your priorities? We're playing the pier..this could be the weekend we make it. Tiffani: Forget about it, Jake. Can't we just enjoy our last weekend together? Jake (rubs forehead): Not your too? Tiffani: Jake, Hawaii is really far and a lot can happen. Well, I just want to spend some time with you along before I leave. Jake: You're right. Forget practice. We'll hang out alone. Tiffani: (excited) Oh, great! Jake: And call some producers for the gig. Where are the yellow pages? (At the Pier.) Sly: Come on Jake, we got a gig to play. Get off the phone. Jake: No, no I'm on hold with this record producer, I think he wants to come we have to stall. Sly: Cool, where's he coming from? Jake: Uh, England? Sly: What?! (grabs phone) Jake: Ok, this is it man. I called a ton of record producers I can feel it, man something big is coming. Sly: Yeah, my phone bill. Jake: (on stage) Hello, Pacific Coast. We're the California Dreams. 1, 2, 3, 4,.. SONGS: (excerpts) Never Give Up, Tough Love, To The End. Jake: All right...we're the California Dreams, we love you! Tiffani: Wow, Jake! That's the best I've ever seen you. Gang: Yeah, Jake. (Enter Brett Dewey.) Brett: Well, then I'm glad tonight's the night I came. I'm Brett Dewey, record producer. I own Style Jam Records. Now, I've see a lot of talent here and if you're interested, I think I can make you famous. Gang cheers and hi-fives. Jake: Everyone's gonna know the California Dreams. Brett: Wait now. I'm sorry I guess I wasn't clear. Group: What do you mean? Brett: I'm only interested in signing Jake. (Act 2 - pier) Gang: That's great. Jake: Wait, you're not interested in the Dreams? Just me? Brett: Well, nothing against the rest of you. You're all very talented, but I see fire in you Jake. You're incrediable. Gang: Go for it. Jake: Sorry, not interested. Its not about me its about us. Our band, our music, our dreams. Tiffani: Jake, its really loyal of you to think of us, but you have to do this. The band has always been a bigger dream for you. Sam: Besides, we're going away to do other things, we'll be fine. Brett: Jake this is a big decision. So talk to your friends and your parents and give me a call. Goodnight. (Exit Brett.) Jake: Goodnight. Lorena: You really need to think about what you're giving up here. This is your future. Jake: No, no no...this is our future. You guys can't really tell me you want to go to college? Those other goals are just a way of protecting yourself from failing as a band. See you guys later, I'm gonna make some more calls. (Exit Jake). Sly: Not on my phone you don't. (throws phone in water.) Ahh! I must think before I act! I must think before I act! Tiffani: What if Jake's right guys? What if we're just kidding ourselves about college and only doing it because its safe? Tony: Man, what a bumer that would be if we turn around in 20 years and realize we went down bogus paths. (Dream sequence begins. Enter Lorena and Sly in business suits.) Lorena: Oh, Sly I'm soo happy. We just opened our 5,000 Sharkey's in Paris. Sly: Well, what can I say beside "la-baboom?" Lorena: I'm so thrilled we invited our old gang to the grand opening. (Mark enters, wearing a wig w/ponytail.) Mark: (singing) I have arrived. Sly: Mark, glad you came. I know you're busy with your world wide piano tour. Mark: I'm glad to be here, but please don't call me Mark. I prefer "Markmoniov". (Sam in a "Star Trek" outfit, "beams" in.) Lorena: Hi, Captain Woo! How's everything on the space station? Sam: Great! Mark: Is Tiffani coming? I heard because of her ocean research she's learned to speak dolphin. (Enter Tiffani in a black wetsuit.) Tiffani (screeching in dolphin language) Lorena: What did you say? Tiffani: Oh, sorry. That was dolphin for , "Hi, guys!" (chants of "Tony, Tony" are heard) Sly: Ah, Tony Wicks is here. He's in Paris shooting a new film. Lorena: Yeah, he's the first black James Bond. (motorcycle rumbles) Tony: (off stage) Q, stop this crazy thing! (crashes through window). Group: (clapping) Wonderful! (Enter Tony in black tux.) Tony: That's not me. I'm too rich and famous to do my own stunts. Group: Tony! Tiffani: Hey, where's Jake? Lorena: Oh, Sly and I found him. He was still living with his parents in Pacific Coast. We flew him out. (Enter Jake longer hair and fat stomach.) Jake: Hey! Gang: Hi! Tony: Hey, Jake what have you been up to, besides eating? Jake: What do you mean? I've been trying to get the Dreams discovered. Tweaking our old tunes, calling producers, stuff like that. Tiffani: Oh, Jake in case you haven't noticed, we kind of have lives? Tony: We haven't been interested in being a band for 20 years. Lorena: Yeah, sorry. Jake: Wow, still kidding yourself with all that new dream stuff, huh? We're a band, we should practice, huh? (sings) "Surf dudes, with attitude." Come on you know the words, "Kind of Groovy.." (Dreams sequences ends.) Tiffani: Guys, I'm worried about Jake. If he stays here and clings to a dream that's not real, he will ruin the rest of his life Gang: Yeah. Sly: Well, you guys go ahead, I'll catch up. Tony: Where are you going? Sly: Go get my phone. (jumps over pier, hears splash) I must think before I act! I must think before I act! (Back to Sharkey's, Jake and Brett are talking, Tiffani and the gang run in). Tiffani: Jake, we have to tell you something. We have to tell you now, its urgent, we can't wait. Jake: I got something too. Tiffani: Okay, you go first. Jake: Tell them Brett. Brett: Well, you know that signing Jake is very important to me and since you're so important to him, I'd like to sign the whole band. Jake: I told you man, all we had to do was sit back and wait for something to happen. What do you think? Tiffani: Jake I'm so sorry. We've not interested. Jake: What? Tony: We thought about what you said and we're just not interested in going on as a band. Jake: Didn't -didn't you guys here him? He wants the band. We made it guys, the Dreams, we finally made it. Come on you have to do this. (Group is quiet.) I don't believe you guys. (Jake exits.) (New scene - Jake and Tiff on porch. He hugs her.) Jake: I don't get it Tiff. I mean, this is it, the real deal. And you guys are just walking away. Its like the Dreams were just some stupid nothing garage band. Tiffani: Jake, that's not true. The dreams was one of the most important things in our lives, but for us it was just one part of our lives. Now we're ready to explore the other parts. Jake: But we all dreamed of making it. Those dreams don't just change overnight. Tiffani: They didn't. They just changed so slowly that none of us noticed. Jake: I don't know if I can do it. I'm scared, Tiff. Tiffani: Of course you can do it. You're so talented. Jake: I mean, I don't know if I can do it along. Sometimes I feel like I'm nothing without you guys. Tiffani: You listen to me Jake Sommers. You can do this. Part of what made the Dreams so great is how strong it made each one of us. Jake: Yeah, but without Winkle I'll have no one to yell at. (Tiff smiles.) Tiffani: We're all scared. We're all so use to having each other that the thought of being apart is impossible. You have to do this. Jake: You're right. I gotta sign that contract. What about us? We're not gonna make it are we? Tiffani: I don't see how we can. I'll be in Hawaii and you'll be playing concerts all over the world. (Jake starts to cry and brushes Tiff's hair off her face.) Jake: I'm gonna miss you so much. Tiffani: Me too. (They hug.) (Next Scene - back at the pier, singing the end of "She's Not You.") Jake: Thank You. Tonight's a special night because this is the last gig that the California Dreams will ever play together. SONG: So Glad I Was There There are places to go, I haven't been yet. And faces that tell me, I still haven't met. And times, in my life I'll never forget. I'll always remember you as the very best. And when I think about you now and all we shared, I smile and know I'm just glad I was there. I'm so oh glad, I was there. There could never be another time or place, That will ever be quite the same, And if I could I'd take you with me everywhere I go, This dream is the one thing I will always know. And when I thing about you now and all we shared, I smile and know I'm just glad I was there. I'm so oh, glad, I was there. (guitar solo) And when I thing about you now and all we shared, I smile and know I'm just glad I was there. I'm so oh, glad, I was there. I'm so oh, glad....I was there. Ahhh....Ahhh....oooooooo (clapping) Jake: You guys wanna hit Sharkey's for a goodbye soda? Mark: I can't. I have an early flight to New York. I still have some packing to do. I'm gonna miss you guys. (group hug) Sly: Hey cuz. High - ho, silver man...(shakes hands) Mark: ...and away. (hugs) (Exit Mark.) Lorena: I can't go either, my mom wants to sit up and talk. Sam and Tiff...I'm never gonna find best friends like you. (hugs them) Or a crazier friend than you Tony. (hugs him) And Jake...I know you're gonna sell a million albums. Even if I have to buy them all myself. (hugs him) And I'll see you in the morning. (kisses Sly) (Exit Lorena.) Tony: Well, we can't go to Sharkey's either. Every time I go near the place I break down and blubber like a baby. Sam: Besides, we're gonna take one last walk on the beach to say goodbye. Tony: Goodbye you guys. (turns to walk away) Oh, I can't! I can't say goodbye! (hugs them) (Exit Sam and Tony.) (offstage) Tony: Goodbye! Group smiles. Tiffani: I can't believe how easy it was to tell you to move on with your life and how hard it is to really do. Jake: I'm never gonna stop loving you, Tiffani. (kisses and hugs her) Tiffani: Bye, Sly. Sly: Bye, Tiff. (hugs her) (Exit Tiffani.) Sly: We had some battles didn't we Sommers? Jake: We sure did Winkle. But we made each other better you know. You really kept me on my toes. Sly: Yeah, you too. You're not gonna tell me you love me or anything are you? Jake: I sure am. Come here you jerk. (Hugs Sly) Sly: Take it easy man. Make me proud. Jake holds up his fist to Sly then Sly exits. Leaves Jake alone on the pier with solo music playing in background. Jake looks at the band equipment and touches Tiffani's bass. The End!
